Willow the bee hunter E-mail

WillowMy youngest cat Willow has a new hobby. She likes to catch honey bees and bring them in...alive! As you could probably guess I do not really appreciate her bringing in live bees and refuse to pick them up in case they sting me!

My mum had gone down to the Co-op and I was in the house on my own when this unfortunate event happened. Willow had gone out shortly after my mum had left the house as normal. But when she came back in she was mewing persistently which was quite unlike her. I went into the kitchen to find her laid down next to a honey bee whch was on its back, kicking its legs, with only one and a half wings, trying to get up so I didn't know if it would live or die.

At this time I had begun to panic because I knew that soon it would be on its feet again and then it would fly around the room scaring me even more. I am not frightened of bees or honey bees but if they come too close I will move out of the way to avoid being stung and I didn't really want to touch it as it may well have been angry and feel threatened.

I did the first thing that came to my mind and rang my mum. Of course there is no signal in Co-op and so she didn't answer. Soon she rang me asking if there was anything that I needed and I quickly told her about the bee and asked her what to do. She told me to put a glass over it to keep it where it was until she got home.

When mum got home, a few minutes later, she freed the bee and checked Willow for bee stings and when we knew that she was clear we let her out again. After about five minutes she came back in with another bee, this one had both its wings! As you can see this is going to be a problem as I will not touch the bees and mum is frightened of them! I can handle her bringing in dead mice, but the bees are a bit too dangerous as if she gets stung then it could block off her windpipe and suffocate her.

I personally think that she will start to bring in butterflies soon and god knows what else. We still cannot figure out how she brings them in still alive because she would have to carry them very gently to get them through the cat flap.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has had this problem as it is something that intrigues me quite a bit!
