Bolton Council has joined forces with Greater Manchester Police and Age Concern to launch a campaign to encourage older people to be on their guard for town centre thieves.Police will be handing out cat bells on June 30 in the town centre in a bid to prevent purse thefts. The bell – normally worn around a cat’s neck – can be attached to purses. The hope is that if a pickpocket is trying to take a purse from a bag or pocket then the noise from the bells when disturbed will warn potential victims. Since the beginning of January this year, 32 purses and wallets have been stolen in Bolton town centre from shoppers aged between 65 and 85 years old. Councillor Elaine Sherrington, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer, said the cat bells will help to deter pickpockets but shoppers still need to be careful with their belongings when out shopping. |
