![]() Photo credit: PA Firefighters used ropes to lower firefighter Raul Vega to rescue the kitten, that had fallen in and was clinging to debris floating on top of about eight feet of water. Vega managed to guide the black kitten onto solid debris in a corner of the enormous pit and then pulled himself to the area so he could stand. The kitten, nicknamed 'Lucky', managed to hide inside an old washing machine but Vega was able to get it using a snare pole provided by city animal control officers. The kitten was hauled up in a cat carrier, with Vega pulled up shortly afterward. Workers at the JCIA had called the fire department after hearing the kitten's loud cries and it took rescuers more than half an hour to rig ropes to lower a man safely down to the surface of the water. Lucky will be taken to an animal shelter where he will be vaccinated and be put up for adoption, animal control workers said. "I had a few kitten rescues in working fires, but this is the first from a garbage pit,'' Vega said, adding that it was "smelly, dirty and really swampy down there.'' |
