At least 24,000 people have been forced from their homes in Iowa by flooding, which damaged crops in America's main corn state, bringing comparisons to the devastation in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The Humane Society of Missouri was called on to assist in water rescues which resulted in over 300 animals being saved from the Cedar Rapids Area, in Des Moines.

South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana have also been affected.

Russ Shelton managed to rescue seven-year-old cat Sam after from his flooded home Saturday.

Sisters Caycee and Caytie Ribble were reunited with their pets Oreo the cat and Dusty the rabbit. Their mother and her boyfriend returned to their house through waist-high water to rescue the animals.

In Illinois, local Senator Barack Obama was seen helping local people fill sandbags on the banks of the Mississippi river at Quincy.

"Since I've been involved in public office we've not seen this kind of devastation," the Democratic presidential hopeful said. (BBC)
