Hi Sue, it has been very easy for us to train the cats not to jump up as we work from home and are with them most of the time.

Whenever they were about to jump up we would just say a firm NO and gently knock their paw off the sofa with a finger, they soon learned they weren't allowed on the furniture, they know they can sit on our laps but when they decided to sit beside us we would put them on the floor, they now understand it is our laps or the floor.

If ever they were about to scratch we would again say a firm NO,
they never scratch or sit on the sofas. If you have the time and the patience you can have a nice home and also cats in it.We have a leather and fabric suite and it hasn't got a mark on it.

As long as their claws are kept trimmed and you supply cat scratch posts you can train them.

When we go out we put the cats in their own grooming/sleeping room and never let them run round the house when we are out.

well have ordered dome of them sticky paws today to put on sofa to hopefull stop him jumping on it think i herd him scratching on back of it earlier but by the time i got up to see he had stoped so not sure. hope he wont start that.
