Kippy, the worldwide GPS collar brand, has released figures showing that cats collectively travel 1.3 million kilometres (km) every single day, the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back twice.
Based on Kippy’s database of more than 1,700 British cats, the average outdoor cat travels around 1.5km a day, although there are some standout cases.
The app, which tracks both movement and health indicators, identified its ‘top mover’ as a British Shorthair that travelled more than 165km in a single month.
The rise in movement is being credited to the return to office working, with more pets being left to their own devices as owners spend increasing amounts of time away from home.
Iacopo Buccarelli, Brand Reputation Manager at Kippy, said: “It’s fascinating to see what our cats get up to. They’re out living their lives whilst we’re living ours.
“We pride ourselves on being able to provide reassurance to pet owners, who can track their pets’ whereabouts when they’re not at home.”
Cats were found to be most energetic during the evening, with average activity levels peaking at 7pm. Activity then declines throughout the night before rising again from around 4am, reaching another peak at 8am.
