Changing the litter is a task cat owners can't avoid. How can the ScoopFree Crystal Pro Self-Cleaning Litter Box by PetSafe help? Image credit: PetSafe

ScoopFree Crystal Pro Self-Cleaning Litter Box has proven to be a fantastic addition to our home. To introduce the product, this is a self-cleaning litter tray designed to minimise both maintenance and odour.

The beauty of this tray lies in the supplied crystal litter and disposable tray. The disposable tray removes the need for digging around and burying one’s hand in waste-ridden litter, instead offering a sturdy cardboard tray that is quickly and easily disposed of when its time comes. The crystal litter (included with the starter tray) absorbs moisture and bacteria, which is key to the tray’s odour-repellent performance. Something else I noticed is that the crystals don’t seem to cling to your cat’s paws, which is especially beneficial for furrier cats.

Another core aspect of the tray is the cat-triggered rake. Once your cat has finished their ‘business’, a sensor is triggered as they exit, activating the rake which sweeps solid waste into the concealed waste compartment. This again helps to minimise odour. This does mean the tray needs to be plugged in at all times, which could be a drawback depending on where you plan to place it.

At a glance, the unit is relatively unassuming, so for those with a particular aesthetic in mind for their litter tray, it fits the mould. In terms of putting it together, I personally assembled the tray and removed the necessary components to change the tray and unclasp the rake. Everything is very cut and dried, with instructions that are informative and supported by detailed images, which is always welcome.

A handy aspect of the box is that it tracks how often your cat uses the tray. If you notice any steep increases or decreases, this could provide an early warning sign of potential health issues.

Another factor to consider is how long the tray can be left between changes, which varies depending on how many cats you have. For a single cat, the tray should last around 20-30 days. This drops to roughly 10-15 days for two cats, and 7-10 days for households with more than two. When combined with the ongoing cost, this may be less suitable for multi-cat homes.

The litter box is online for £307.99 with the option of purchasing additional accessories. Additional litter costs £16.99 while replacing the stainless-steel tray starts at £66.99. That includes an additional bag of crystal litter, but removes the disposable element all together.
