While on a campervan trip around the Greece and the islands, Nigel and Nicola Cooke found themselves obsessed with a new feline companion, while in Corfu at Camping Paleokastritsa.

“For those who have visited Greece, and indeed the islands previously, you will be familiar with the stray cat and dog issue and on our second night we befriended a tiny kitten, who was probably only around six weeks old and clearly too young to be away from its mother.

“We also noticed that it had an issue with both eyes, as well as some breathing difficulties. We are both animal lovers and felt compelled to help, reaching out to both a cat rescue centre and a vet located in Corfu Town.

The following morning, we transported Tinker, as we had named her, over to Corfu where she was checked over. She was indeed suffering from a multitude of issues which would require some long-term care but thankfully the cat sanctuary we had spoken to previously, happily agreed to take her in.

“We offered to pay the bill, which, despite the number of issues she was suffering from, was a fraction of what we would have to pay in the UK and the sanctuary agreed to come and collect her. Another German family from the campsite, who had also helped look after her, offered to split the costs and even considered adopting her.

“We hear that, despite her sight issues, Tinker is doing well at the sanctuary. We plan to continue to sponsor the sanctuary and their wonderful work going forward.”

Nigel and Nicola still sponsor Tinker’s sanctuary to this day, and provided a more recent photo from just a month ago.
